Stone Magic ~ History & Lore

Aquamarine History & Lore

Beautiful and mystical would be the best words to describe, Aquamarine. Throughout history this gorgeous stone has mesmerized mankind.

A unique form of beryl, Aquamarine derives its name from the Latin word, augua marinus which means "Water of the Seas." Its color varies from pale blue, light blue-green, or even light green. It is usually clear, but iron content gives it its blue/green color. The green of aquamarine is a watery green without any traces of yellow. Because of a phenomenon called a pleachroic effect it may look blue, green, or colorless depending on which angle you look at it. Just the color of this stone takes you to a calm, clear place in your mind.

Sailors believed the stone to be made by Mermaids and wore it as a talisman for protection when at sea. I wonder if they believed they could exchange the stone for their life if confronted by one? It was also believed to calm seasickness.

In the Middle Ages Aquamarine was believed to protect a person from being poisoned. Because of this it became very popular with the rich and royals. This trendy stone also claimed to be effective as an “oracle” crystal. When cut as a crystal ball, it was thought to be a superior stone for fortune telling.

Aquamarine was also cherished but Christians. It was named the stone of Apostle, St. Thomas, because it “imitated the sea and the air” and the Saint “made long journeys by sea, even to India, to preach salvation.”

Native American Animal Symbol

If you were born Feb 19 - March 20th
You are a Wolf

Deeply emotional, and wholly passionate, the Wolf is the lover of the zodiac in both the physical and philosophical sense of the word. The Wolf understands that all we need is love, and is fully capable of providing it. Juxtaposed with his/her fierce independence - this Native American animal symbol is a bit of a contradiction in terms. Needing his/her freedom, yet still being quite gentle and compassionate - we get the picture of the "lone wolf" with this sign. In a nurturing environment the Wolf is intensely passionate, generous, deeply affectionate, and gentle. Left to his/her own devices the Wolf can become impractical, recalcitrant, obsessive, and vindictive.
