The Mermaid's Pearl ~ Part 2
June instantly regretted the scream as her mouth filled with water. She could feel the flames of the forest fire above her, but reached for the surface anyway. The risk of being severely burned was nothing compared to drowning. She fought to break the hold on her foot, but it was no use.
She felt herself being pulled deeper into the pool. She looked down to see what was holding her and attempted to scream again as the face of man appeared beside her.
To her surprise he plopped something in her mouth. She again reached for the surface, she had to get away, but the man held her by the shoulders and shook his head.
"It's okay," he said. "I'm trying to help you."
"You're going to kill me," she heard herself reply.
June cocked her head. How did she just speak under water? And how had she not drown yet? Her eyes widened, maybe she had died.
"Am I dead?" she asked.
The man laughed. "No, you're not dead. Far from it. In fact had you stayed on the surface you probably would be."
"I don't understand." June shook her head. "How can I breathe under water? How can I speak?"
The man smiled. "Because I gave you the Mermaid's Pearl. It allows you to live like us."
"Like us?" June finally took in the man. His blonde hair flowed with the underwater current and his blue eyes sparkled like sapphires. His chest was bare, but just below instead of legs, the man had emerald fins. "You're a mermaid!"
