The Mermaid's Pearl ~ The Conclusion
Shimmer grabbed June's hand and started to swim. She found it easy to keep up having the advantage of the Mermaid's Pearl. He took her through a tunnel, they surfaced on the other side of the fire.
"I never knew this lake was connected to the pond," said June.
"All water is connected in one way or another," replied Shimmer. "Come with me."
Shimmer took June to a small cove. The bottom of the lake was littered with tires, old boots, and cans. As they surfaced she was surrounded by plastic bags, milk cartons and other floating debris.
"But this can't be true!" she exclaimed. "We have recycling programs for all these items."
"You see it for yourself, June." Shimmer gestured around the cove. "Just because you have the programs doesn't mean everyone takes part in them."
"They must," she said, tears forming in her eyes, "just look at what we've done. I have to stop this."
Shimmer smiled and said. "I was hoping you'd say that. Of course, I was hoping it would never come to this. But with your help, we can stop this from continuing."
June turned to him. "I'm so sorry, on behalf of my people, I am so sorry."
She felt something small in her mouth, and gently fished it out. It was the Mermaid's Pearl. She tried to hand it to Shimmer. He help up his hand.
"You keep it, that way you can be a messenger for your people. You will always be welcome in our world, come and go as you please," said Shimmer.
"I will make this right," June said.
"I know you will," Shimmer said, before diving under the water.
