To Catch a Butterfly ~ Part 1

January lifted her finger as the dark red butterfly landed delicately on the perch.

"Ruby," whispered January in the language of the butterflies, "what news have you?"

The butterfly fluttered it's wings causing January to lift an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

Ruby nodded a reply.

January sighed. "I knew he would be back. I just hoped it would not be this soon."

Ruby fluttered again, causing January to shake her head. "No, we will not tell the elders yet. The Easterner has been reasonable before, hopefully he will see sense again. Show me where Garnet lays his head."

The butterfly took off and began flying toward the south. This did not surprise January, the digger always did prefer the warmness of the southern mountains. Light on her feet she kept up with her winged friend and soon gained an entourage of other butterflies; Sapphire, Emerald, and Topaz joined her run.

Ruby halted her flight, causing January and the other butterflies to skid to a halt. She laid on the ground and squinted at the valley below. There in the meadow sat a small camp, complete with tent and small fire still smoldering. She scanned the tree line, looking for the man called Garnet, but found nothing.

"He must be hunting." January hopped up. "Hopefully he has not started yet. I will meet him in his camp, he will see reason."

January took another step, a snap of a twig told her it was the wrong one. Before she could jump out of the way she was balled up in one of Garnet's famous nets.
