Ocean Magic ~ The Spirit Within

Pearl History & Lore

The Abernathy Pearl

This 44-grain, natural freshwater pearl, is the most perfect pearl ever found in the rivers of Scotland. A 44-grain natural pearl is a rare find, and even rarer still is to find a pearl of such outstanding quality as the Abernathy. This famous specimen is nicknamed "The Little Willie Pearl".
The Abernathy pearl was discovered in the River Tay in1967 by a professional pearl diver by the name of Bill Abernathy (hence its name and nickname). The pearl was found in an odd-shaped mussel, common to the River Tay.
The Scottish have searched their abundant rivers for centuries seeking prized pearls. Freshwater pearls were indeed found in abundance until the Industrial Revolution polluted the waterways and wreaked havoc on the pearl producing mussel populations. The Abernathy was displayed for nearly 30 years in a jewelry store in the city of Cairncross until it was sold for undisclosed sum in 1992.

Pearl: A Mini Novella (Part 3)

Part 1 ~ http://annas-legacy.blogspot.com/2012/06/pearl-mini-novella-part-1.html

Part 2 ~ http://annas-legacy.blogspot.com/2012/06/pearl-mini-novella-part-2.html

Pearl managed to avoid her daughter's confused stares as they grabbed their luggage and hailed a taxi. After the suitcases were loaded and everyone settled, Pearl rattled off a quick address to the driver.

"You know where we're going?" asked Heather.

"Of course, I do. You think I'd fly to Scotland and not know where Liam would be? You know you can find anyone on Google." Pearl flicked her hand at Heather.

"I didn't know you knew how to Google." Heather raised her eyebrows. "Don't you want to go to the hotel first and freshen up?"

Pearl shook her head. "No, we go now or I'll lose my nerve and never go."

Heather patted her mother's hand and turned toward the window giving Pearl some time to think about what she was going to say to Liam. Pearl knew they had a good twenty minute drive before arriving at Liam's stables. A quick internet research had shown her the Briarpatch Stables that Liam owned sat where she had once lived. She wondered how he'd take seeing her again?

"Here we are," said the driver, his thick accent hanging in the air, snapping Pearl out of her thoughts.

"Just leave the luggage here," Pearl said to the driver. "We'll get it later."

The driver nodded as Pearl and Heather slid out of the car. Heather looked around the yard as Pearl headed toward the stables.

"Shouldn't he stay?" asked Heather, pointing to the cab. "Where are you going?"

Pearl looked over her shoulder, but kept walking. "He won't be in the house. Not on a beautiful day like today. We'll be lucky if he isn't riding."

"Mom, you're walking around like you know the place."

"I do," said Pearl entering the barn. "Hello?"

No one answered so Pearl continued through the stable to the back corral. Shading her eyes from the sunlight, her heart skipped a beat as an older gentleman wearing a blue and green plaid quilt and black shirt rode up to great them.

He stopped short just before the door. "Pearl?"

"Yes, Liam." Pearl smiled, feeling her cheeks flush.

Liam jumped off his horse and embraced Pearl in a soft hug. "I never thought I'd see you again."

"I know, Liam, I'm so very sorry." Pearl leaned back from their embrace. "Liam, I have never forgotten you. All this time, I have kept my promise. The secrets can stop now."

"You mean Richard?" Liam raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, Liam, my husband died about a year ago." Liam embraced Pearl again

"I'm so sorry, love," he said.

"He was a wonderful man," Pearl said. "I'm thankful for the time I had with him."

"I will always be thankful to him as well," said Liam. "How long can you stay? We have a lot of catching up to do." He glanced at Heather. "And probably a lot of explaining to do as well."

"Excuse me," said Heather, scratching her head. "I'd really like to know what's going on now."

Pearl broke from Liam. "Liam, this is Heather, your daughter."

To be continued on July 17th....

Stone Magic ~ The Spirit Within

 Pearl History & Lore
In Hindu culture, pearls were associated with the Moon and were symbols of love and purity. Hindu texts say that Krishna discovered the first pearl, which he presented to his daughter on her wedding day.
Islamic tradition holds pearls in even higher regard. The Koran speaks of pearls as one of the great rewards found in Paradise, and the gem itself has become a symbol of perfection.
Christianity also adopted the pearl as a symbol of purity. Many of these ideas have come down to us in pearl lore and legend, and persist even today. For example, pearls are often associated with brides and weddings -- a concept possibly dating all the way back to Krishna and the wedding of his daughter. Pearls are also said to symbolize tears, to provide love and fertility, to symbolize purity, and to ward off evil.

Pearl: A Mini Novella ~ Part 2

Miss Part 1? ~ http://annas-legacy.blogspot.com/2012/06/pearl-mini-novella-part-1.html

Pearl reclined the airplane seat and closed her eyes.

"Oh no you don't." Heather hit the recline button, causing Pearl's seat to bounce upright. "You're going to explain that letter."

"Heather, I don't want to talk about it. It's none of your business." Pearl hit the recline button again.

Heather slapped her hand behind the chair not allowing it to go back. "Mom, I'm on a flight to Scotland for you. The least you can do is talk to me."

"I didn't ask you to come," said Pearl, folding her arms and looking out the widow.

"Mom, how could I not after reading the letter?" asked Heather.

Pearl continued to stare out the window. This was something she alone had to fix.

"Should I read the letter out loud?" asked Heather, pulling the letter out of her purse. "I'm sure the rest of the plane would like to hear."

"Shhhh..." Pearl scolded, snatching the letter. "You're a stubborn little fart, I'll give that."

Sighing, Pearl closed her eyes. The truth was going to come out, Heather might-as-well hear it from her.

"I was 17 when we lived in Scotland. Papa had a job running a profitable coal mine, so we lived better than most. We had a nice house, which included a stable. Papa had acquired a pair of beautiful Friesians horses. The black beauties needed special care and required a lot of time, so Papa asked around the coal mine until he found the savviest horseman."

"Liam?" asked Heather.

Pearl shook her head. "No, Liam's father, Gerard was hired for the position, which included lodging in the bunkhouse. Liam's mother had died during childbirth so it was just him and his father who moved into the bunkhouse. Liam and I became close very quick, since I didn't have any siblings, I was thrilled to have someone my own age to talk to. We'd spend hours with the horses and soon became lovers."

Pearl choked back a sob. "Then there was an accident at the mine and nine workers were killed. The townspeople blamed Papa, said the conditions led to the explosion. Papa was just as distraught over the death of those men as their families, but he worried for our safety. Liam and his father hid us in whiskey barrels to get us to the port. Before boarding the ship, Liam begged me to stay. Said we could go to the city, be married, and live a happy life. My Papa was so sad over the loss of the men. I knew he couldn't bear the loss of his daughter too. I promised Liam I'd come back. Promised I would marry him one day. Papa gave Liam and his father our Friesians horses as thanks for their loyalty. Liam went on to open a very lucrative breeding operation with the pair. That's how I've kept up with him all these years."

"But that still doesn't explain the letter," said Heather.

"Within a month of returning stateside, I married your father. He was a man of means and my family had nothing after the disaster at the mine. I wrote Liam to tell him and that was his return letter." Pearl leaned her chair back. "I'm tired Heather, let an old woman sleep."

"I'm still confused, Mom." Heather leaned her chair back too.

"I know dear. I'll explain the rest when we land."

Native American Animal Symbol

Native American Animal Symbol
Woodpecker: Jun 21 – Jul 21
Woodpeckers are usually the most nuturing of all the Native American animal symbols. The consummate listener, totally empathic and understanding, the Woodpecker is the one to have on your side when you need support. Of course, they make wonderful parents, and equally wonderful friends and partners. Another proverbial feather in the Woodpeckers cap is the tendency to be naturally frugal, resourceful, and organized. In a nurturing environment the Woodpecker is of course caring, devoted, and very romantic. Left to his/her own devices the Woodpecker can be possessive, angry, jealous, and spiteful.

Native American Animal Symbol

Native American Animal Symbol
Deer
May 21 – Jun 20
This Native American animal symbol is the muse of the zodiac. The Deer is inspiring lively and quick-witted. With a tailor-made humor, the Deer has a tendency to get a laugh out of anyone. Excellent ability for vocalizing, the Deer is a consummate conversationalist. This combined with his/her natural intelligence make the Deer a must-have guest at dinner parties. Always aware of his/her surroundings, and even more aware of his/her appearance, the Deer can be a bit self-involved. However, the Deer's narcissism is overlooked because of his/her congeniality and affability. In a supportive environment the Deer's natural liveliness and sparkly personality radiate even more. He/she is an inspiring force in any nurturing relationship. Left to his/her own devices the Deer can be selfish, moody, impatient, lazy, and two-faced.

Pearl: A Mini Novella ~ Part 1

Pearl leaned back in her rocking chair and sighed, a worn letter dangling between two long fingers. A gentle breeze blew through her porch tickling her nose with the scent of wisteria, as a red hen pecked at her feet.

Pearl looked down at her little friend. "Oh Penny, can I right a wrong that was done so long ago?"

"Mom?"

Sighing Pearl met her daughter's gaze. "Heather, I didn't know you were coming over."

"Well imagine my surprise when I caught Sandy dragging my large suitcase down the stairs to bring to her Grammie." Heather crossed her arms. "Care to explain?"

"Did you bring the suitcase?" asked Pearl.

Heather slid into the rocking chair next to her mother. "Yes, but before I let you have it, you're going to tell me what's going on."

Pearl watched Penny scratch around the wisteria bush. "I don't think you'll understand, but what it boils down to, is I need to right a wrong."

"What wrong?" Heather's eyebrows lifted in concern.

"I ruined somebody's life 45 years ago."

"Forty-five years ago! Mom, you were 17 years old. I'm sure whomever you think you wronged as let it go by now. If they are still alive, that is."

"Heather, I don't expect you to understand, but I must go to Scotland. I must explain myself to Liam."

"Scotland!" Heather frowned. "You're not going to Scotland."

"Here." Pearl handed Heather the letter. "Bring the suitcase in when you finish. I'm gonna start packing. My flight leaves at five. I'll need you to look after the house and chickens while I'm gone."

"You're going today!" Heather stood. "Mom, you can't. You don't even have a passport."

Pearl paused in the doorway. "Honey, I've had a passport since the age of five."

"But, you and Dad never went anywhere."

"But I always hoped he'd change his mind and we would take a trip. But, that's a story for another time. Go on read the letter."

***

Fifteen minutes Heather tossed the suitcase on the bed. "I understand."

"I knew you would. Now help me pack will ya?" Pearl forced a small smile. "And be sure to check on the chickens."

"I'm sorry, Mom, but I can't."

The smile dropped from Pearl's lips. "Ok, then. Thanks all the same. I'll just if Mr. Jenkins along the way can drop in."

"I can't because I'm going with you."
