Walking into the dance I scanned the crowd. Someone in this gym had put my name in for Harvest Queen, wrote me a note to meet them under the bleachers, and then ditched me. Chelsea had taken every opportunity to make my life miserable over the past three days, and now it was my turn to return the favor to whomever had put this kink in my life. But who?

"Aquamarine, over here."

I looked to my left and found my BFF, Amber, standing with her longtime boyfriend, Ryan. "Place looks great doesn't it?" she squealed.

"Oh, yes, a barn theme, it just screams refinement." I sarcastically threw my hair over my shoulder.

"You're just in time they're going to announce the queen," she said, throwing her arm around me.
"I just know you're going to win."

As if on cue, Mrs. Parkerly made her way on stage and tapped the microphone to see if it was live. "Attention students, it's the time you've all been waiting for. I have the results of the Harvest Queen vote right here."

The students gathered around the stage with Chelsea front and center.

"And the winner is... wow this was a close one... the winner by only two votes is... Chelsea Green!"

I clapped as Chelsea fanned her face dramatically and thanked her fans. Honestly, I was relieved, I never wanted to be Harvest Queen.

Amber squeezed my shoulder. "I just knew you would win or I wouldn't of signed you up."

"It was you?" I faced her.

She blushed. "You've been my best friend since the sixth grade. You've had to put up with your ridiculous name, although pretty, for your entire life, and you always act so cool about it. I've never seen you bash anyone, except Chelsea on occasion. If anyone deserved to be queen it was you. I'm just sorry you lost."

"Well, I did only lose by two points." I smiled at her. "You know that's going to have Chelsea's head spinning for days."

Amber smiled back, before dragging me to the dance floor to groove out to a funky number. As I danced I couldn't help but look at my friend. Who needs to be Harvest Queen, when you've got a friend like Amber in your corner? Besides, she'd make a great Winter Ball Queen and I'd make sure she was signed up.

  1. This was a fun read. I was rooting for Aquamarine to win. And wasn't expecting her best friend of being the one to nominate her. I just knew it was going to be somebody trying be cruel. I really enjoyed it.
