Time stood still for Garnet. His one true love lay motionless in the bathtub as flames closed in on the small room. The smoke burned his throat as tears ran from his bloodshot eyes.

Falling to his knees he fumbled for the knobs to turn on the cold shower. He felt for a pulse on her wrist. Nothing. He tried again on her neck, willing himself not to shake, to concentrate. Nothing. He watched for the rise and fall of her chest, the heat increasing on his back. Nothing. He saw and felt nothing.

She was gone.

Garnet let out a roar. “She can’t die! Bring her back, God! Bring her back!”

He kissed her hand and wrist, cuddling the limp arm around his face. “Don’t go,” he whispered. “I need you. Please don’t die.”

Leaning over the tub he grabbed her under the arms, cradling his head under her neck. “I love you, Kori. I love you so much. I can’t do this without you. I don’t want to do this without you. Please, love, come back. Come back to me. You don’t have to love me, but you do have to be here for me to love. Don’t go.”

The smoke thickened and Garnet’s plea became a cough. He had to get her out of there, no matter what her condition. He wouldn’t leave her to… he couldn’t leave her to burn. He rose, determined to carry her away from the nightmare, but the room spun. He turned to the side and vomited.

He fought the urge to black out as he bent to pick her up. He coughed and fell forward. She crashed back into the tub.

He brushed her hair away from her face. “I’m so sorry, baby. If I can’t get you out, then I’ll stay with you. I promised never to leave you and I never will.”

Garnet climbed into the tub and wrapped his arms around Kori. He buried his head in her hair, inhaling the strawberry scent of her shampoo, and waited for the darkness take over.
